In the Spotlight, Prosecutor Ryan Mears Suddenly Gets Tough on Crime
In the aftermath of a drunken Mark Sanchez provoking a fight that led to the stabbing of both Sanchez and a 69-year-old truck driver, Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears has finally discovered his “tough on crime” voice, just as the national spotlight turned toward Indianapolis. Convenient. Right?
In the days following the senseless stabbing, Prosecutor Mears upgraded Sanchez’s charges from a misdemeanor to a felony. Kudos. However, Mears hasn’t sought justice nearly as aggressively for many other victims across Marion County. Consider just a few examples:
Mears is silent: When two brothers were murdered and their killer was offered a plea deal against the family’s wishes.
Mears is silent: When a college volleyball coach was found in possession of child pornography and was given a plea deal with no jail time.
Mears is silent: When 3 people were killed by a man driving 140 mph and the perpetrator was given a plea deal for two years in prison.
Mears is silent: When a serial offender with 99 prior arrests attempted to stab a 69-year-old man to death.
Mears postures as a tough-on-crime prosecutor when the cameras are rolling to score political points, while Marion County residents continue to suffer from the violent crime he routinely refuses to prosecute.
Democrats Stifle Elected Officials and the Thousands They Represent
At this week’s City-County Council meeting, Democrats broke with procedure, silencing the Republican caucus and the thousands of voices they represent. You can WATCH THE CLIP here.
The Democrat supermajority would rather bypass local government procedure to silence Republicans than work through policy disagreements for the good of all Indianapolis residents.
The Indianapolis Democrat caucus has revealed a troubling pattern of silencing voices of opposition, from sexual harassment survivors to council members to everyday constituents.
JUNE: A victim of the Hogsett administration's harassment was hauled out of a City-County Council meeting, at the direction of Democrat Council President Vop Osili, while trying to share her story.
SEPTEMBER: Councilor Leroy Robinson, admits he “denies all requests” from community leaders seeking to speak at public safety meetings.
OCTOBER: The Republican caucus—and the thousands of voters they represent—was silenced during the debate on Mayor Hogsett’s budget.
