Council Democrat Leadership’s Silence Speaks Volumes

Over the past year, City-County Council President Vop Osili has repeatedly silenced opposing views and stepped away from key leadership responsibilities, especially when it comes to holding Mayor Hogsett accountable for his administration’s culture of corruption.

Why? Maybe he’s eyeing a mayoral run. Maybe he doesn’t want to be tied to Hogsett’s sinking political ship. What’s clear is that Osili’s silence and abdication of leadership makes him complicit in Hogsett’s corruption.

As Council President Osili calculates his next political move, you should be quick to remind your neighbors of Osili’s track record of silencing dissent and his spineless approach to leading Indiana’s largest city.

  • STEP AWAY - OCTOBER 2024: When serious allegations of harassment surfaced against Mayor Hogsett’s top aide, Thomas Cook, Council President Osili refused to lead. Instead Osili abdicated his leadership role leaving junior councilor, Crista Carlino chair of the committee.

  • SILENCE - JUNE 2025: A victim of the Hogsett administration's harassment was hauled out of a City-County Council meeting, at the direction of Council President Osili, while she tried to share her story.

  • SILENCE - SEPTEMBER 2025: When Public Safety Committee Chair Councilor Leroy Robinson (D) admitted to denying community leaders from speaking at committee meetings, Council President Osili did nothing. Instead, allowing Councilor Robinson to continue silencing concerned residents.

  • SILENCE - OCTOBER 2025: The Republican caucus and the thousands of voters they represent were silenced by Council President Osili during the debate of Mayor Hogsett’s budget.

  • STEP AWAY - OCTOBER 2025: After a report exposed the Mayor for fostering a culture of corruption inside his administration, Council President Osili stopped short of demanding Hogsett be held accountable.

The latest development:

  • STEP AWAY - OCTOBER 2025: This week, Council President Osili again abandoned his leadership duties during the Policy and Rules Committee, a committee he is supposed to chair. Instead, Councilor Dan Boots ran the meeting, discussing next steps in the whitewashed investigation of Hogsett's chief aide, Thomas Cook, while Osili sat silent.
